Are My Teeth Too Crooked for Invisalign?

Brunette woman smiles as she puts in her Invisalign clear aligners because her teeth are crooked

Metal braces are an effective solution for straightening teeth but some patients desire an alternative. Invisalign® is a popular alternative to braces. These smooth plastic aligners are comfortable, clear, and removable! However, they aren’t always the best orthodontic option for patients with severe misalignment. So, you may wonder if your teeth are too crooked for Invisalign treatment.

How Does Invisalign Work?

Your Invisalign aligners will be customized according to your unique orthodontic needs and teeth shape for a snug fit. For best results, you should wear your aligners at least 20 to 22 hours a day. You’ll replace the aligner set about every 2 weeks as the trays shift your teeth into place. On average, the straightening process takes 12-18 months.

Whenever you eat, drink anything other than water, and brush your teeth, you will remove the clear plastic trays. To keep the trays free of bacteria and food debris, you will need to daily clean them with a denture cleaner or antibacterial soap. Toothpaste is too abrasive.

Benefits of Invisalign

Because you remove the trays for eating and cleaning your teeth, your food choices do not need to change and your oral hygiene routine remains largely the same (except for the extra brushing after meals and daily cleaning of your aligners). Because the aligners are smooth and clear, Invisalign is very comfortable and not very noticeable. This allows you to smile proudly during treatment and your mouth is unlikely to feel irritated.

Are My Teeth Too Crooked?

Invisalign uses subtle, gentle pressure to straighten teeth. This means that aligners can only fix mild to moderate misalignment. For very crooked teeth or bite problems that require extensive movement, like significant rotation, metal braces are likely a better option.

If you have small spacing issues, minor bite issues, or moderately crooked teeth, Invisalign will most likely work. But the only way to know for sure is to schedule a consultation with our expert team here at Lybrook Dental Center!

Besides Invisalign, our Fruita dental office also offers Six Month Smiles®. These cosmetic braces are great for adults who want a fast transformation. Unlike Invisalign clear aligner therapy, Six Month Smiles utilizes brackets and wires.
