Am I a Good Candidate for Dental Implants?

Dental implants are an excellent restorative option for patients who need one tooth or several teeth replaced. Implants are sturdy titanium posts that are surgically implanted into the gums. Once the healing process begins, the post will fuse with the jawbone, which holds the artificial tooth in place and helps prevent jawbone deterioration.

In this blog post, we discuss factors our team considers when evaluating a patient for dental implants.

Jawbone Strength

Patients who have had missing teeth for many years may not have enough bone to support and anchor the implants. In some cases, bone graft surgery can restore jawbone health and allow patients to receive implants, so we recommend speaking with your dentist to see if this option will work for you.

Patients who want to utilize dental implants should be in general good health, have positive oral health, and be committed to daily oral hygiene and routine dental checkups and cleanings. In addition to having a healthy jawbone, the gums should be healthy and free of periodontal disease before implants are placed.

Patients who are not good candidates may not be able to receive dental implants for a variety of reasons. Diabetes, cancer, autoimmune disorders, and other health conditions that slow down the healing process can affect patients who want to utilize dental implants. This is because the healing process after the titanium implant is placed lasts for several weeks before the implant is topped with a restoration.

Patients also have to be old enough to receive dental implants, as it is strongly recommended that teenagers and young adults wait until their jawbones are done growing before an implant is placed. Partial dentures can be used in the meantime.

Tobacco Use

Smoking and using tobacco products can also slow down the osseointegration process, so if you are a heavy smoker, implants may not be the best option for you.
